How to Take Attendance using QR Codes

If you take attendance in your classes, you can have students mark themselves as Present with QR Codes. You can turn your classroom computer monitor outward and have students scan the QR Code to mark their attendance at the start, in the middle, or at the end of class. Additionally, if you share your screen via Zoom when you select the QR Code, your virtual attendees can mark their attendance as well. If your classroom could benefit from this, feel free to follow the steps below:

1. Turn editing on:

2. Add an activity or resource:

3. Select Attendance followed by Add:

4. Customize the settings of the activity. When finished, select Save and display:

5. Next, you will want to Add session so that the Attendance module knows when your classes take place:

6. Then, you will enter in the next class start and end times in the Add session field:

7. In the next drop-down menu, you will want to fill in settings for Multiple sessions. This way, your attendance meetings can be recurring throughout the duration of the semester:

8. For the next section, Student recording, make sure to mark Allow students to record own attendance:

9. Within that same selection, mark Include QR Code:

10. The rest of the setting should be desirable by default. I would recommend selecting Add at this point:

11. On the day of class, when you are ready to take attendance, open up the Attendance activity:

12. Navigate to the date and select the inline Password/QR Code logo:

13. Once you press that button, a QR Code will appear:

14. Once your students scan this with their QR Code reader or smartphone camera, they will automatically be directed to your Moodle course shell where they can mark themselves as Present. If the student was not already signed into Moodle, they will be prompted to do so.
