What is Azure MFA?

Azure Multifactor authentication (MFA) is a process where you are prompted for a secondary verification to confirm your identity before logging into specific applications.

In the context of Trine University, you are prompted for AzureMFA when logging into University-specific resources, such as:

  • myPortal
  • Moodle Learning Management System
  • Email accounts
  • Department-specific applications

Azure MFA works by requiring two or more of the following authentication methods:

  • Something you know, typically a password
  • Something you have, such as a trusted device that's not easily duplicated, like a phone or hardware token/key
  • Something you are, like biometrics (a face or fingerprint scan)

There is a process for a different item called 'Self-Service Password Reset' or SSPR. SSPR requires that you provide a phone number, alternate non-Trine email address, and/or specific Security Questions. SSPR and AzureMFA registrations are combined so that you sign-up for both SSPR and AzureMFA simultaneously. You'll notice this registration is happening when you log in and are greeted with a 'More Information is Required' screen where you are prompted to fill out the information detailed above.
